New York City Darts Academy: Precision, Community, and Excellence in the Heart of the City
The New York City Darts Academy stands as the premier destination for individuals seeking to master the intricate art of darts within a supportive and professional environment. Our academy is built on the belief that darts is more than just a game; it is a discipline that fosters mental clarity, hand-eye coordination, and a deep sense of camaraderie among participants.

About Our Academy
Providing a structured foundation for athletic growth and social connection through specialized sports education
The New York City Darts Academy is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and preservation of darts as a competitive sport and a tool for community building. Our organization operates with a dual focus on technical excellence and social inclusion, ensuring that every individual who walks through our doors feels valued and challenged. We recognize that in a fast-paced city like New York, finding a hobby that allows for both focus and relaxation is essential. Our facilities are designed to reflect this balance, offering state-of-the-art dartboard setups and comfortable lounge areas where players can analyze their games. We pride ourselves on our transparency and our commitment to the sport, serving as a hub for both local enthusiasts and visiting players who share our passion for the board. We believe that by providing a professionalized setting for what has traditionally been seen as a casual pastime, we can elevate the public perception of darts and showcase the incredible skill and dedication it requires. Our commitment to the sport is matched only by our commitment to our members, as we strive to create an environment where the principles of fair play and mutual respect are the foundation of every interaction and competition.
Our Story
From humble beginnings in a local hall to a leading non-profit institution for darts education
The journey of the New York City Darts Academy began over a decade ago when a small group of passionate players recognized a void in the city’s recreational landscape. While New York has always had a vibrant pub darts scene, there was a distinct lack of formal training environments where the sport could be practiced with the same rigor as golf or tennis. Our founders set out to create a dedicated space where the technical aspects of the game could be studied and taught without the distractions of a typical nightlife venue. Starting in a modest community center, the academy slowly built its reputation by hosting free workshops and youth clinics, proving that there was a significant appetite for structured darts education among New Yorkers of all ages. We remember the early days of setting up portable boards and manually scoring matches on chalkboards, fueled by nothing but a shared love for the game and a belief that it deserved a better platform. This grassroots beginning ensured that we never lost sight of the community aspect of the sport, even as we grew into a sophisticated training institution with national recognition.

What We Do
Comprehensive training programs and community events designed to foster skill and sportsmanship
Our primary focus at the New York City Darts Academy is the delivery of high-quality coaching through a variety of formats. We provide individual one-on-one sessions where players receive the undivided attention of a professional instructor, as well as group clinics that emphasize the social and competitive aspects of the game. Our curriculum covers everything from the basics of the stance and grip to complex mathematical out-shot strategies. Daily activities at the academy are varied, ranging from open practice hours where members can work on their consistency to structured league nights and round-robin tournaments that test a player’s ability to perform under pressure. Every activity is supervised by our staff to ensure a productive and respectful atmosphere. We utilize advanced video capture technology to help players visualize their throw in slow motion, identifying subtle hitches or inconsistencies that might be holding them back. This data-driven approach allows for rapid improvement and helps players build a level of consistency that is impossible to achieve through casual play alone.
Our Mission
Discover the art of darts with expert coaching, comprehensive training programs, and a supportive community
Our mission is to provide a world-class training environment that makes the sport of darts accessible to everyone in New York City. We are committed to fostering a culture of excellence where seasoned coaches bring years of experience and passion to ensure that every student receives personalized guidance. By offering a variety of training sessions designed to meet the unique needs of each player, we aim to bridge the gap between recreational play and professional competition. We strive to maintain a vibrant community of enthusiasts who participate in regular competitions to test their skills and make new friends, ultimately elevating the status of darts as a respected and inclusive sport within our city. This mission is driven by our belief that the pursuit of a difficult skill can be a transformative experience, offering individuals a sense of purpose and a community of peers who share their dedication. We are not just teaching a game; we are building a foundation for lifelong learning and social connection. Our goal is to ensure that every New Yorker, regardless of their background or previous experience, has the opportunity to discover the joy and the discipline of professional darts.

Our Vision
Becoming a global benchmark for urban sports academies and community-led athletic development
We envision a future where the New York City Darts Academy is recognized as the gold standard for darts instruction worldwide. Our goal is to expand our facility to include a dedicated youth arena and a digital broadcast suite that allows us to share our matches and tutorials with a global audience. We hope to inspire a new generation of players who see darts as a viable path for athletic scholarship and professional achievement. By continuously innovating our training technology and expanding our community partnerships, we aim to ensure that the sport of darts remains a thriving and essential part of New York’s cultural and athletic identity for decades to come. We see a world where our methods are studied and replicated by other organizations, proving that urban sports academies can play a vital role in the social and mental health of a city. Our vision includes the establishment of international exchange programs, where our students can compete and learn alongside players from around the globe, fostering a spirit of international cooperation through the shared language of the board.

Our Values
Integrity, inclusivity, and the pursuit of mastery in every throw and every interaction
At the core of the New York City Darts Academy are the principles of integrity and respect. We believe that sportsmanship is just as important as skill, and we require all our members and staff to conduct themselves with honor both on and off the oche. Inclusivity is a non-negotiable value for us; we actively work to remove barriers to entry, ensuring that individuals from all walks of life feel welcome and supported. We also value the pursuit of mastery, encouraging our students to embrace the challenges of the game with a growth mindset. This commitment to continuous improvement drives everything we do, from the way we maintain our equipment to the ongoing professional development of our coaching staff. We believe that by holding ourselves to the highest standards of conduct, we set an example for our students and contribute to a more respectful and supportive society. Our values are not just words on a wall; they are the lived reality of our academy, evident in the way we celebrate each other’s successes and support each other through the inevitable challenges of the sport.

Our Impact
Strengthening the social fabric of New York City through shared goals and mutual support
The impact of the New York City Darts Academy extends far beyond the scores recorded on our boards. We have successfully created a “third space” for hundreds of New Yorkers—a place outside of home and work where they can find belonging and purpose. Our youth programs have been shown to improve academic confidence through our focus on mental math, while our senior programs provide vital social engagement and cognitive stimulation. By hosting charity tournaments and partnering with local businesses, we contribute to the economic and social vitality of our neighborhood. We measure our success not just in trophies won, but in the friendships forged and the lives enriched through the shared experience of our sport. We have seen lonely individuals find a new family within our walls, and struggling students find a new sense of pride in their ability to master a difficult skill. Our impact is measured in the stories of resilience and community that emerge from our academy every day, proving that a small dart can have a massive ripple effect on the health and happiness of a city.

Michael Sullivan has dedicated over thirty years to the sport of darts, transitioning from a top-tier competitive career to becoming one of the most respected coaches in the Northeast. His caring approach is rooted in his belief that anyone can achieve greatness with the right mindset and a solid foundation of fundamentals. Michael’s coaching style is patient and analytical, focusing on the minute adjustments that lead to consistent accuracy. He has coached multiple state champions and is a frequent contributor to national darts publications, sharing his insights on the biomechanics of the throw. At the academy, Michael oversees the development of our curriculum and personally mentors our junior coaching staff, ensuring that his wealth of knowledge is passed down to the next generation of instructors. He is a constant presence on the floor, always ready with an encouraging word or a subtle correction that can change a player’s entire trajectory. His dedication to the academy is matched only by his love for the game, a passion that is infectious to everyone who has the privilege of learning from him.

Sarah Jenkins
Youth Program Director and Senior Instructor
Sarah Jenkins joined the academy with a background in childhood education and a passion for competitive sports. As our Youth Program Director, she has been instrumental in creating a curriculum that is both fun and educationally rigorous for our younger members. Sarah believes that darts is an excellent tool for building self-esteem and resilience in children, and she works tirelessly to ensure that our youth sessions are supportive and engaging. Her warm personality and ability to connect with students of all ages make her a favorite among our families. Sarah holds several certifications in sports psychology, which she uses to help her students overcome performance anxiety and build a healthy relationship with competition. She understands that for a child, the academy is often a second home, and she takes that responsibility seriously, fostering an environment where every child feels safe to fail and encouraged to try again. Sarah’s work has been recognized by local school boards for its impact on student engagement and mathematical proficiency, and she is a frequent speaker at conferences on the benefits of non-traditional sports in youth development. Her commitment to our junior members is the bedrock of our academy’s future, ensuring that the next generation of players is equipped with both skill and character.

David Chen
Technical Director and Professional Coach
David Chen brings a unique perspective to the academy, combining his experience as a professional mechanical engineer with a lifelong love for darts. He focuses on the technical aspects of the game, helping players choose the right equipment and understand the flight dynamics of their darts. David’s approach is highly personalized; he uses video analysis and statistical tracking to help players identify patterns in their performance and make data-driven improvements. His commitment to technical excellence is balanced by his friendly demeanor and his willingness to spend extra time helping a student get their setup just right. David is also responsible for the maintenance of our high-quality playing surfaces, ensuring that every board is in perfect condition for our members. He believes that the interaction between the player and their equipment is a critical, often overlooked component of the game, and he enjoys the challenge of fine-tuning a setup to match a player’s unique biomechanics. David’s workshops on dart maintenance and customization are always well-attended, reflecting the deep respect our members have for his expertise. He is a perfectionist in the best sense of the word, and his influence can be seen in the high level of technical proficiency displayed by our students.

Elena is a tireless advocate for the social benefits of our sport, and her enthusiasm is a driving force behind our mission to build a more connected and supportive New York City.

James Thompson
Senior Performance Coach
James Thompson is a veteran of the international darts circuit who now focuses on preparing our advanced players for high-level competition. His coaching is intensive and focused on the mental stamina required for long tournament days. James shares his wealth of experience in match play strategy, teaching his students how to handle the pressure of the big stage and how to read their opponents. Despite his competitive focus, James remains a warm and approachable mentor who is always ready to share a story or a tip with a beginner. His deep knowledge of the game’s history and his respect for its traditions inspire everyone who works with him to aim higher. James understands that at the elite level, the game is played mostly between the ears, and he specializes in mental toughness training and strategic planning. He has a keen eye for the psychological shifts that occur during a match, and he teaches his students how to maintain their focus even when the crowd is loud and the stakes are high. His influence on our competitive teams has been profound, leading to a significant increase in our members’ rankings and tournament successes. James is a true professional who brings a level of international prestige and tactical depth to the academy that is unmatched.

Our Work
Fostering cognitive development and technical proficiency through specialized sports instruction
The educational work we do at the New York City Darts Academy is centered on the intersection of physical skill and mental agility. We provide a structured learning environment where the complexities of darts are broken down into manageable components, allowing students to build their proficiency step by step. Our sessions often incorporate lessons on geometry and probability, as players must constantly calculate the most efficient paths to a zero score. This focus on “math in motion” provides a unique educational benefit, particularly for our younger members who find that their classroom performance improves as their skills on the board grow. We believe that the discipline of practice and the satisfaction of mastering a difficult skill are fundamental lessons that our students carry with them into all areas of their lives. Beyond the board, we teach critical thinking and strategic planning, as players must decide which out-shots to aim for based on their own strengths and their opponent’s position. This high-speed problem-solving is a valuable cognitive exercise that sharpens the mind and improves decision-making abilities in real-world scenarios. Our instructors are trained to identify the specific learning styles of each student, ensuring that the educational experience is as effective and rewarding as possible.
Play & Exploration
Encouraging creativity and stress relief through the joy of recreational darts
While we take our coaching seriously, we also recognize the vital importance of play and exploration in the development of a well-rounded individual. Our academy provides ample opportunities for unstructured play, where members can experiment with different throwing styles and equipment without the pressure of a formal lesson. This exploratory phase is crucial for developing a player’s unique “feel” for the game and for maintaining a sense of fun and excitement. We often host themed social nights and “blind draw” doubles events that encourage players to step out of their comfort zones and interact with different members of the community. This playful atmosphere helps to alleviate the stresses of city life, providing a healthy outlet for relaxation and social discovery that is accessible to everyone regardless of their competitive ambitions. We believe that play is a fundamental human need, and our academy provides a safe and supportive space where individuals can rediscover the joy of simply doing something for the fun of it. By removing the fear of failure, we allow our members to be more creative and adventurous in their approach to the game, often leading to unexpected breakthroughs in their skill levels.

Social & Emotional Development
Building resilience and community through the challenges and triumphs of competitive sports
The social and emotional work of our academy is perhaps our most significant contribution to the lives of our members. Darts is a sport of extreme highs and lows, and learning how to navigate those emotions is a core part of our training. We teach our students how to win with grace and how to lose with dignity, fostering a sense of sportsmanship that is increasingly rare in modern society. The community aspect of the academy provides a strong support network, where members encourage each other through slumps and celebrate each other’s successes. For many of our participants, the academy is a primary source of social interaction, helping to combat isolation and build lasting friendships. We prioritize the emotional well-being of our students, ensuring that our environment is always one of mutual respect and psychological safety. This focus on emotional intelligence helps our members build stronger relationships both inside and outside the academy, as they learn the value of empathy and active listening.
Programs/Services
Tailored training pathways for every age group and experience level within our community
The New York City Darts Academy offers a diverse range of programs designed to serve our community across all life stages. Our “Junior Flights” program is specifically for children aged 8 to 15, focusing on the fundamentals of safety, scoring, and sportsmanship in a high-energy and supportive environment. This program is designed to be the perfect introduction to the sport, using age-appropriate equipment and instructional techniques that make learning fun. For adults, we offer both “Foundation” courses for beginners and “Elite Performance” tracks for those looking to enter the professional circuit. The Foundation course covers everything from the basics of the stance to the mechanics of the release, while the Elite track dives into advanced match strategy and mental stamina. We also host specialized “Senior Bulls” sessions during the day, which are tailored to older adults looking for a low-impact sport that provides both mental stimulation and social engagement. These sessions are a vital part of our community, offering a place for seniors to stay active and connected in a welcoming environment.

Community & Engagement
Strengthening our city through active partnerships and inclusive local events
Community engagement is at the heart of the New York City Darts Academy’s mission, as we believe that our sport has a unique power to bring people together. We actively seek out partnerships with local schools, youth centers, and senior residences to bring our introductory clinics to those who might not otherwise have the opportunity to play. These outreach programs are a cornerstone of our non-profit work, allowing us to serve a diverse cross-section of New York City’s population. We also work closely with local businesses on 58th Street to host neighborhood block parties and charity events that promote a sense of local pride and cooperation. These events are designed to be accessible and welcoming, introducing the academy to a wider audience and fostering a truly inclusive atmosphere. Our “Family Fun Days” are a particular highlight of our calendar, inviting parents and children to compete together in friendly matches that emphasize connection and shared experience over competition. These days are filled with laughter and learning, providing a perfect example of how our sport can build stronger families and communities.

The Thompson Family
Parents of Leo (Age Group: Junior Flights, 10-12)
The New York City Darts Academy has been a revelation for our son Leo and for us as parents. Before joining, Leo struggled with focus in school and was often overwhelmed by traditional team sports. Since he started the Junior Flights program, we have seen a remarkable transformation in his confidence and his ability to concentrate on complex tasks. The coaches, especially Sarah Jenkins, are incredibly patient and have a wonderful way of making the technical aspects of the game accessible and exciting for kids. Leo has not only improved his mental math skills through the constant scoring but has also made a group of wonderful friends who support each other. We are so grateful for the warm and professional environment that Michael and his team have created; it’s truly a hidden gem in Manhattan. The academy has given Leo a sense of pride and accomplishment that we haven’t seen in any other activity, and it has become a highlight of our family’s week. We’ve even started playing together at home, and it’s been a wonderful way for us to connect and have fun as a family.
Linda Garrison
Mother of Maya (Age Group: Young Adults, 16-18)
As Maya approached her final years of high school, she was looking for a hobby that would help her manage the intense stress of college applications and exams. Finding the New York City Darts Academy was a turning point for her. Under the expert guidance of David Chen, Maya has developed a deep appreciation for the precision and discipline required for the sport. She finds the academy to be a peaceful sanctuary where she can focus entirely on her game and leave the pressures of the outside world behind for a few hours. The sense of community among the players is truly heartwarming; Maya has found mentors in some of the older members and feels like she is part of something meaningful and supportive. It’s been a fantastic experience for our whole family to watch her grow in this sport and to see her build such resilience and focus. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Common questions about our programs, safety, and membership at the academy
How do I enroll my child in the New York City Darts Academy and what is the starting age for participants?
Enrollment is a simple and straightforward process that can be completed through the enrollment portal on our website or by visiting our facility in person for a consultation. We typically recommend that children start at age eight, as this is the developmental stage where most have developed the necessary hand-eye coordination, focus, and the ability to consistently follow important safety protocols. However, we assess each child individually and are happy to discuss early enrollment for those who show a particular readiness. We offer introductory tours and trial sessions so that families can fully experience our professional environment and meet our coaching staff before committing to a full program. Our administrative staff is always available to discuss which of our programs would be the best fit for your child’s current skill level, interests, and schedule, ensuring a positive and successful start to their journey with us.
What safety measures are in place at the academy given that darts involves sharp objects?
Safety is our absolute and unwavering priority, and we have implemented strict, professional-grade protocols to ensure a secure environment for everyone. All of our professional dartboards are set up with more than adequate spacing between stations and are equipped with high-quality safety surrounds to prevent bounce-outs from causing any injury. Students are taught the proper, safe handling and throwing techniques from their very first moment on the oche, and all training sessions are closely and constantly supervised by our certified coaching staff. We use only high-quality, professional equipment that is regularly and thoroughly inspected for any signs of wear or damage, and we maintain a zero-tolerance policy for any behavior that compromises the safety or well-being of our members. Our facility is designed to be a safe haven for the sport, and we take every precaution to ensure that the focus remains entirely on learning and enjoyment.
What does the educational curriculum cover and is it only about throwing darts?
Our curriculum is intentionally comprehensive and covers a wide range of skills far beyond the physical throw itself. We include detailed lessons on match strategy, mental preparation techniques, and the significant mathematical components of the game. For our younger members, we specifically emphasize the practical application of mental arithmetic in scoring and out-shot calculation, making the sport a powerful and engaging learning tool that complements their schoolwork. We also focus on the rich history of the sport, the rules of international competition, and the importance of sportsmanship and ethical conduct. Our goal is to ensure that our students have a well-rounded and deep understanding of the game and its place in the global sporting world. We believe that by teaching the “why” and the “how” behind the game, we provide our students with a more fulfilling and intellectually stimulating experience.
Are meals or snacks provided during the training sessions and what is the daily schedule?
While we do not provide full meals as part of our standard programs, we have a comfortable and well-maintained lounge area where members and their families can purchase light refreshments, healthy snacks, and beverages. We strongly encourage all our students to bring their own reusable water bottles to stay properly hydrated during their practice and training sessions. Our daily schedule is carefully designed to be as flexible as possible to accommodate the busy lives of New Yorkers, with coached sessions held in the late afternoons and evenings on weekdays, and comprehensive clinics and tournaments held all day on weekends. We offer a variety of time slots to accommodate different school and work schedules, and our facility remains open for supervised member practice during non-instructional hours. We strive to make the academy an accessible and convenient part of our members’ daily routines.
How involved can parents be in the training process and are there opportunities for family play?
We firmly believe that parent involvement and support are crucial factors in a student’s success and overall enjoyment of the sport, and we actively encourage families to be part of the academy experience. While we ask that parents allow our professional coaches to lead the formal instructional sessions to ensure a focused learning environment, we host regular open-house events, “Parent-Player” workshops, and family tournaments where everyone can play and learn together. We also provide a wealth of resources and tips for parents to help their children practice safely and productively at home. Our coaches are always available for brief consultations after sessions to discuss a student’s progress, celebrate their achievements, and answer any specific questions parents may have. We see our relationship with parents as a partnership dedicated to the growth and happiness of the student.
What equipment do I need to get started and does the academy provide it?
New members do not need to purchase any equipment to get started with us, as the academy provides high-quality house darts, flights, and all other necessary supplies for our introductory and beginner sessions. This allows new players to explore the sport without any initial financial barrier or commitment to equipment. As players progress and begin to develop their own unique throwing style, our coaches provide expert, personalized advice on choosing their own set of professional darts that perfectly match their grip and preferences. We also have a fully-stocked on-site pro shop where members can purchase a wide range of professional-grade equipment, accessories, and academy apparel. Our ultimate goal is to make the sport as accessible and welcoming as possible, so we ensure that every individual has access to the high-quality tools they need to succeed and enjoy themselves from their very first day on the board.

We believe that our diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and we are committed to building a workforce that reflects the vibrant and diverse community we are so proud to serve. The application process is designed to be straightforward and transparent; we ask interested candidates to submit a detailed resume and a thoughtful cover letter outlining their professional experience and their personal passion for our mission and the sport of darts. Selected candidates will be invited for a series of interviews and a practical demonstration of their skills, allowing us to ensure a great fit for both the individual and the academy. Join us in our exciting mission to elevate the sport of darts and build a stronger, more resilient, and more connected New York City. We look forward to seeing what you can bring to our team.
