Our Work
Fostering cognitive development and technical proficiency through specialized sports instruction
The educational work we do at the New York City Darts Academy is centered on the intersection of physical skill and mental agility. We provide a structured learning environment where the complexities of darts are broken down into manageable components, allowing students to build their proficiency step by step. Our sessions often incorporate lessons on geometry and probability, as players must constantly calculate the most efficient paths to a zero score. This focus on “math in motion” provides a unique educational benefit, particularly for our younger members who find that their classroom performance improves as their skills on the board grow. We believe that the discipline of practice and the satisfaction of mastering a difficult skill are fundamental lessons that our students carry with them into all areas of their lives. Beyond the board, we teach critical thinking and strategic planning, as players must decide which out-shots to aim for based on their own strengths and their opponent’s position. This high-speed problem-solving is a valuable cognitive exercise that sharpens the mind and improves decision-making abilities in real-world scenarios. Our instructors are trained to identify the specific learning styles of each student, ensuring that the educational experience is as effective and rewarding as possible.
Play & Exploration
Encouraging creativity and stress relief through the joy of recreational darts
While we take our coaching seriously, we also recognize the vital importance of play and exploration in the development of a well-rounded individual. Our academy provides ample opportunities for unstructured play, where members can experiment with different throwing styles and equipment without the pressure of a formal lesson. This exploratory phase is crucial for developing a player’s unique “feel” for the game and for maintaining a sense of fun and excitement. We often host themed social nights and “blind draw” doubles events that encourage players to step out of their comfort zones and interact with different members of the community. This playful atmosphere helps to alleviate the stresses of city life, providing a healthy outlet for relaxation and social discovery that is accessible to everyone regardless of their competitive ambitions. We believe that play is a fundamental human need, and our academy provides a safe and supportive space where individuals can rediscover the joy of simply doing something for the fun of it. By removing the fear of failure, we allow our members to be more creative and adventurous in their approach to the game, often leading to unexpected breakthroughs in their skill levels.

Social & Emotional Development
Building resilience and community through the challenges and triumphs of competitive sports
The social and emotional work of our academy is perhaps our most significant contribution to the lives of our members. Darts is a sport of extreme highs and lows, and learning how to navigate those emotions is a core part of our training. We teach our students how to win with grace and how to lose with dignity, fostering a sense of sportsmanship that is increasingly rare in modern society. The community aspect of the academy provides a strong support network, where members encourage each other through slumps and celebrate each other’s successes. For many of our participants, the academy is a primary source of social interaction, helping to combat isolation and build lasting friendships. We prioritize the emotional well-being of our students, ensuring that our environment is always one of mutual respect and psychological safety. This focus on emotional intelligence helps our members build stronger relationships both inside and outside the academy, as they learn the value of empathy and active listening.
Programs/Services
Tailored training pathways for every age group and experience level within our community
The New York City Darts Academy offers a diverse range of programs designed to serve our community across all life stages. Our “Junior Flights” program is specifically for children aged 8 to 15, focusing on the fundamentals of safety, scoring, and sportsmanship in a high-energy and supportive environment. This program is designed to be the perfect introduction to the sport, using age-appropriate equipment and instructional techniques that make learning fun. For adults, we offer both “Foundation” courses for beginners and “Elite Performance” tracks for those looking to enter the professional circuit. The Foundation course covers everything from the basics of the stance to the mechanics of the release, while the Elite track dives into advanced match strategy and mental stamina. We also host specialized “Senior Bulls” sessions during the day, which are tailored to older adults looking for a low-impact sport that provides both mental stimulation and social engagement. These sessions are a vital part of our community, offering a place for seniors to stay active and connected in a welcoming environment.

Community & Engagement
Strengthening our city through active partnerships and inclusive local events
Community engagement is at the heart of the New York City Darts Academy’s mission, as we believe that our sport has a unique power to bring people together. We actively seek out partnerships with local schools, youth centers, and senior residences to bring our introductory clinics to those who might not otherwise have the opportunity to play. These outreach programs are a cornerstone of our non-profit work, allowing us to serve a diverse cross-section of New York City’s population. We also work closely with local businesses on 58th Street to host neighborhood block parties and charity events that promote a sense of local pride and cooperation. These events are designed to be accessible and welcoming, introducing the academy to a wider audience and fostering a truly inclusive atmosphere. Our “Family Fun Days” are a particular highlight of our calendar, inviting parents and children to compete together in friendly matches that emphasize connection and shared experience over competition. These days are filled with laughter and learning, providing a perfect example of how our sport can build stronger families and communities.

The Thompson Family
Parents of Leo (Age Group: Junior Flights, 10-12)
The New York City Darts Academy has been a revelation for our son Leo and for us as parents. Before joining, Leo struggled with focus in school and was often overwhelmed by traditional team sports. Since he started the Junior Flights program, we have seen a remarkable transformation in his confidence and his ability to concentrate on complex tasks. The coaches, especially Sarah Jenkins, are incredibly patient and have a wonderful way of making the technical aspects of the game accessible and exciting for kids. Leo has not only improved his mental math skills through the constant scoring but has also made a group of wonderful friends who support each other. We are so grateful for the warm and professional environment that Michael and his team have created; it’s truly a hidden gem in Manhattan. The academy has given Leo a sense of pride and accomplishment that we haven’t seen in any other activity, and it has become a highlight of our family’s week. We’ve even started playing together at home, and it’s been a wonderful way for us to connect and have fun as a family.

Mother of Maya (Age Group: Young Adults, 16-18)
As Maya approached her final years of high school, she was looking for a hobby that would help her manage the intense stress of college applications and exams. Finding the New York City Darts Academy was a turning point for her. Under the expert guidance of David Chen, Maya has developed a deep appreciation for the precision and discipline required for the sport. She finds the academy to be a peaceful sanctuary where she can focus entirely on her game and leave the pressures of the outside world behind for a few hours. The sense of community among the players is truly heartwarming; Maya has found mentors in some of the older members and feels like she is part of something meaningful and supportive. It’s been a fantastic experience for our whole family to watch her grow in this sport and to see her build such resilience and focus. The academy has taught her that she can master difficult challenges with patience and practice, a lesson that is serving her well as she prepares for the next chapter of her life. We couldn’t be more pleased with the positive impact the academy has had on her well-being and her self-confidence.

Parents of Jack (Age Group: Beginners, 8-10)
We were initially unsure about how our eight-year-old would take to a sport like darts, but the staff at the New York City Darts Academy made him feel welcome and capable from the very first moment. Sarah Jenkins has an incredible gift for teaching children, always focusing on safety and fun while still teaching the real, professional skills of the game. Jack absolutely loves the weekly sessions and is always eager to show us the new techniques he’s learned and his improved scoring. We greatly appreciate the family-friendly atmosphere and the fact that we can stay and watch him practice in such a comfortable and professional space. The academy has taught Jack the importance of practice, patience, and good sportsmanship, and we couldn’t be happier with the progress he’s made both as a player and as a person. It’s been wonderful to see him develop a passion for a sport that encourages such focus and discipline. We feel very lucky to have such a high-quality non-profit organization in our neighborhood, and we look forward to Jack growing with the academy for many years to come.
